Silicone Coated Tooling

Custom silicone tooling offers a unique solution for various applications where traditional tooling does not deliver the desired results. From versatile silicone sheet stock to precision-ground rollers or compliant grippers, these tools deliver efficiency through proper design, testing, and repeatable manufacturing.

ISM offers a wide range of silicone tooling solutions, from bonded and un-bonded fully cured silicone sheets to silicone coated tooling that’s customized to your specific needs and existing equipment. Our chemically bonded and thermally conductive silicone provides ideal heat distribution for high quality stamps and reliable seals.

From hot stamping and robotic grippers to heat sealing and material handling, silicone tooling is as versatile as the silicone itself. Additionally, silicone’s natural non-stick nature makes it a viable option for industries like laboratory/medical and food and beverage that are concerned with preventing chemical leeching.

Customize Your Silicone Tooling

Why customize your silicone tooling solution through ISM? We don’t need to tell you that metal tooling is often highly specialized, meaning you won’t be buying your rollers and heat seal heads “off the rack”. However, many companies opt to purchase unbonded silicone and adhere it to their equipment themselves. This may seem like a cheaper and easier option, but it won’ t be when the adhesive you use fails and the silicone detaches from the metal. We chemically bond the silicone to the metal through compression molding for a permanent hold. Additionally, our customization process will take your specific needs at every stage in the process, even when choosing the silicone compounds themselves.

Silicone Coated Rollers

Engineered with precision, our silicone coated rollers readily conform to surface variations in molded plastic parts, ensuring the smooth application of hot stamping foils and multi-color heat transfers. Other customers have found success using these as conveyor rollers or nip rollers to move materials through a process.

Because of the thermal conductive properties of our silicone and the seamless surface, our rollers are the ideal choice for a wide range of applications, including banding, laminating, printing, and decorating.

Roller Specifications:
  • Face lengths up to 120 inches
  • Finished OD up to 20”
  • Seamless surface in flat, contoured or stepped profiles
  • Aluminum or stainless-steel cores
  • Cores and existing rollers are potentially recoatable

Silicone Coated Seal Bars & Seal Heads

Seal bars and seal heads play pivotal roles in achieving superior seals in flexible and rigid packaging applications. Thermally conductive silicone seal bars, also known as "jaws," work in tandem with metal surfaces to create high-quality seals, ensuring product integrity and security. Meanwhile, silicone seal heads, custom-molded to your specifications, facilitate precise alignment between hard (metal) and compliant (silicone) tools, enhancing seal quality and repeatability.

Benefits of Silicone Seal Bars:
  • Conforms to part thickness, including zippers and multi-layer films.
  • Custom-molding eliminates the need for machining sheet materials.
  • Thermally conductive silicone ensures superior heat seal performance.
  • Compression-molded silicone offers 4x superior thickness tolerances with consistent material dispersion.
  • Available in smooth or textured surfaces.
  • Crowned designs eliminate air holes and leakers, ideal for long seal bars.
  • Easy film release may eliminate the need for Teflon Tape, with high heat tolerance up to 550°F ensuring silicone remains non-sticky.
  • Teflon Bonded Silicone provides an adhesive-free alternative with extended lifespan, particularly suitable where small particle contamination is a concern.

Silicone Stamping Dies

Silicone stamping dies, known for their high efficiency and quality, excel in delivering high-impact visual performance with foils and transfer labels. Dies are manufactured to your specifications, with a range of shapes including flat, contoured, crowned, and multi-level mold options. Due to our unique silicone formulations, our dies excel at conforming to surface variations with single or dual durometers. The combination of our materials and manufacturing methods results in high-impact visual performance with foils and transfer labels.

Key Features:
  • Select silicone dies can be re-coated for repeated use, generating significant cost savings.
  • CNC machine-engraved molds offer high precision and multi-relief capability.
  • Magnetic mounting is optional, increasing placement accuracy while reducing change over time.
  • Photo-etched molds are cost-effective with fast turnaround times.

Robotic End-Of-Arm-Tooling Grippers

Silicone-coated robotic gripper tips provide a non-marring surface for delicate and high-precision handling tasks. Our silicone coating is available in a wide range of durometers, offering a grip surface that conforms to the contours of the part being picked. Our silicone is chemically bonded to EOAT tips resulting in a longer life compared to a rubber surface applied using an adhesive.

Our team will work with you to develop custom gripper tips tailored to your specifications and operational needs. We also coat existing tooling if you already have grippers that fit your application.

Metal Bonded Silicone Rubber Sheet

Our metal backed silicone sheets are a flexible yet durable, non-marring, non-skid material. They feature a layer of thermally conductive silicone backed with aluminum or stainless steel. The silicone and metal backing are chemically bonded, providing a strong, adhesive-free connection that is heat tolerant up to 550°F (288°C), making them an excellent material for challenging applications.

Whether used as packaging seal heads, gasket inserts, or gripper fingers, silicone sheets provide a flexible yet durable solution for a wide array of applications. Moreover, their resistance to compression stress and high temperatures ensures reliability and consistency in performance.

Unbonded Silicone Rubber Sheets

Unbonded silicone rubber sheets are durable, high temperature tolerant, flexible, and conformable. They have excellent physical properties, including high abrasion resistance, good tensile strength, low percentage compression set, and high tear properties. All our rubber sheets are engineered and compression molded to provide a silicone layer that is more consistent throughout with high tolerances compared to extruded sheets.

The best method for mounting or attaching unbonded silicone rubber sheet stock is via clamping mechanisms instead of adhesives. Example applications include:

  • Platens
  • Gaskets
  • Gripper Fingers
