Steps in Our Custom Project Process

  1. Discovery

We begin with an in-depth analysis and assessment of your specific needs, reviewing past challenges and evaluating key factors such as machine format, dwell time, cycle time, temperature demands, and tooling type (e.g., Seal Bar, Seal Head, Support Fixture).

  2. Quotation/Prototyping

After understanding the unique needs of your application, we develop a quotation for creating prototype parts - tailored to test and determine the optimal solution.

Depending on the application, the process may include:

    • Designing a mold to apply silicone to a metal substrate or create an unbonded sheet or gasket.
    • Working with your creative to produce a graphic to be applied to a die.
    • Waterjet cutting standard sheets into custom profiles.
    • Providing a project timeline for design and manufacture.
  3. Testing and Performance Optimization

Once prototypes are tested and part performance is optimized to your needs, we determine production requirements based on the number of parts and frequency of delivery (for example, 120 parts per year at 10 per month). This helps us decide the number of molds or cavities needed to meet your schedule.

  4. Factory Recoating

Depending on the part configuration and structural integrity, your parts may be recoatable. This means they can be returned to our facility when the silicone becomes worn. We will guide you through the process of having your parts recoated with a new silicone layer. Recoatable tooling is stripped of worn silicone, surface cleaned and prepped, then recoated with the appropriate silicone compound.

The result is a family of interchangeable tooling that is sustainable due to lower production costs over the life of the tool.

Customer Success

Rich’s Ice Cream was faced with failing heat seal tooling, causing extensive down-time and high tooling costs. ISM followed our process of discovering the issue, developing and testing a prototype, and supporting replacement tooling.
