Precision orifices (flow restrictors) are critical for flow control, particularly with pneumatics, eliminating the need for a valve. The low flow rates possible with miniature orifices and orifice fittings allow the user to obtain the precise flow control needed for their application. In addition, the design flexibility of orifice inserts is such that they are one of the most popular cost effective methods to deploy for controlling air, gas and fluid flow. Orifice insert materials include brass, stainless steel, polycarbonate, polysulfone and synthetic sapphire.

Connections include threaded, barbed and push-in with straight, elbow, tee and "Y" (wye) configuration style fittings. Any precision orifice or flow restrictor will clog unless adequate upstream filtration is provided. Using a separate filter upstream of precision orifices should probably be planned for in order to supply protective filtration that is easy to service.
